Freude trinken alle Wesen

Friends, if you see me in tears over the next few days, fear not. These tears are born of joy, not sorrow. For I have conducted the vodka-Brita experiment, and, lo, I have confirmed the results.

I took Hood River Vodka (number one in Oregon apparently) and put it through the process. Hood River comes in a plastic bottle, has a label made in Photoshop and costs $3.45 a pint. I purposely bought the cheapest crap they had, you see. After three filterings, the harsh unpleastness of regular HRD (as it is known) turns into a frighteningly smooth beverage. Each sip beckons the next.

Since I am on the subject of intoxicating beverages, can anyone recommend a good holiday party drink? I am looking for something potent and tasty, something for those who want to step to the real, but can't take full kicking egg nog. Reader HK suggests the improbable Jaegar Bomb as well as the Irish Car Bomb, guaranteed to knock into the next drunk bracket. Any other thoughts?

Most winter holiday drink recipes that I have seen are pretty labor intensive (e.g. "bake six apples . . .") or call for totally random ingredients (when was the last time you bought mace? The spice that is, not the personal defense spray). That said, here are some bevvies to consider, in descending order of buzzliness:

Snowshoe: equal parts peppermint schnapps and 151. Gah-RUN-teed to
get your wassail on. More of a shooter than a sippin' drink, though.

Hot Toddie: 1 tsp. Sugar, Boiling Water, 1 1/4 oz. Brandy, Bourbon or Choice of Liquor. In a mug, add 1 teaspoon of sugar and your liquor choice. Fill with hot water, garnish with an orange or lemon twist. Think of it as a warmed over Old Fashioned . . . you'd most certainly be teachin all the haters how to stunt. Proper.

Hot Buttered Rum: Lemon Twist, 1 Stick of Cinnamon, 1 Clove, Boiling Cider, 2 oz. Rum and a pat of butter. In a mug or pewter tankard, add spices and rum. Fill with Cider & float Butter in top. If it calls for butter, it must be good. CAVEAT: Don't drink this in a red state; you might find yourself on the wrong end of a Charlie Daniels song.

B,

Actually thanks to seasonal cookie baking we will be swimming in mace, cardamon, nutmeg, you name it.

Dude, if I deploy the Snowshoe I may as well have "Where's your head at?" on constant repeat on the stereo. That will be a little too much excitement, know what I mean?

As to the other two, yeah that is the kind of thing I am talking about. Both the Hot Toddie and Hot Buttered Rum are labor intensive, but so is my go-to, the mojito. I know its a summer drink, but the peeps line up for a nicely made mojito.

Melissa will sometimes pull out the mulled wine which, like the Hot Toddie and Hot Buttered Rum, gives the added bonus of warming comfort while you get buzzed.

there is a concoction popular in maine called "fish house punch." rest assured there are no fish or fish by-products in this drink. It is very good, and will as my friend Cs says "knock your dick in your watchpocket." I'll send the recipe to you if you are interested. Guaranteed to loosen people up.
