Another one for the pile

Nonanon loves the Meaning of Night. This is one of those books that I pick up every time I see it, read the back and the blurbs, ponder and put back. Super-dense novels always give me pause, but her review has me excited to read it now.

You will like that one. Nonanon is dead-on that it is a bit too long, but the guy is a good enough writer that you don't really notice (unlike Special Topics). The ending is a bit abrupt, as well, which is not a sotry-telling problem but does undercut the whole "lost manuscript" construct a bit. The whole unreliable narrator thing is very well done here. I am compiling a Powells shopping list and this one is going on it, along with a horror novel, Rendezvous with Rama and The Gods Themselves. And other things I see while I am there.

Steve:
"Unreliable"! Thank you. That's the word I was looking for.

I agree with you on the end, although I didn't really think about it until you said it. Serves me right for reviewing fiction! Glad you liked it too.
