Scholars of REM-iania continue to debate the relative merits of early and late period IRS, but the cognoscenti all agree on this point: Rockville is the best REM song. Few REM lines have ever come close to this one: "But everybody else in town only wants to bring you down and that's not how it ought to be."

I definitely lean toward the earlier stuff. Harborcoat, Pretty Persuasion, Driver 8, Crazy and - of course - Don't Go Back to Rockville were all remarkable for their ability to evoke a sense of wistfulness (just what every kid in high school needs). . . without beating you about the head and neck with it like Morrissey & Co. Of the more recent tracks, I would saw E-Bow the Letter is probably tops for me.
