The author of the
Flashman novels has died. I had a bad reaction to the first Flashman book, apparently because I took it too seriously. I thought the main character was repellent, but perhaps I was in a poor mood? As BookDaddy
notes, the book's thesis is that the Victorian world rewarded bad behavior and punished the good. More reactions are

here. I am tempted to think that I gave up far too early on these books and should read them with a much more ironic eye.
